About the Band
The Green Mountain Playboys play high energy Cajun music made for dancing. Based in the traditional Cajun style of southwest Louisiana, the Playboys feature twin fiddles, accordion, electric guitar, bass, and drums. They play two-steps, blues, and waltzes with a fresh, modern approach to time-tested songs of love, heartbreak, and intrigue. The band is a confluence of accomplished musicians whose single goal is to bring you hot dance music. They have shared a stage with Cajun greats such as Steve Riley, the Revelers, Dewey Balfa, Jesse Lege, Tracy Schwarz and many others.
Lee Blackwell, drummer and guitarist, was introduced to Cajun Music in the 1980’s by his old friend Tracy Schwarz, who played in legendary New York City folk outfit the New Lost City Ramblers. Along with Schwarz, Blackwell found himself playing with the late great Dewey Balfa of Louisiana when he toured in the Northeast. Blackwell and Schwarz also played together in the Tracy Schwarz Cajun trio, which cut two award-winning records and brought the music to the UK over eight annual tours.
Jay Ekis plays electric guitar and sings in the Green Mountain Playboys. He has played in many successful bands such as the Concrete Rivals, JP Harris and the Tough Choices, Sputnik, Ekis, and more.
Alec Ellsworth, fiddler and accordionist, grew up in the dance halls of New England, where he fell in love with traditional music. While biking around the US with a fiddle on his back, he fell in love with Cajun music and the culture of food, dance and community that is embedded in the tradition. Over the summer of 2012 he received a grant to study traditional American fiddle styles, and he spent the summer learning from some of our great cultural proprietors in Louisiana and beyond. He loves to play for dancers of all kinds, and also teaches Cajun dance at many of the Playboys’ gigs.
